How To Know If You’re A Suitable Candidate For Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most advanced and long-term solutions for replacing missing teeth. Besides restoring full mouth function, the new teeth will look the same as your natural ones. However, not every patient is suitable for this treatment.

At Virtus Dental Center, our patients will go through detailed personalized examinations to guarantee maximum safety and long-term implant success. Furthermore, you will find detailed instructions that will help you understand if dental implants are the right treatment for you.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small screw-like devices composed of titanium or other biocompatible materials, which will be placed in the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. They will act as a strong base for the placement of a dental crown, bridge, or denture, restoring full mouth function and aesthetics.

Once placed, the implant will gradually integrate with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. In many cases, dental implants are the safest and most natural choice for patients who have lost one or more teeth, without altering nearby teeth as dental bridges do.

Who Is A Suitable Candidate For Dental Implants?

Overall health condition

To be considered a suitable candidate for dental implants, your overall health should be in good condition. Chronic illnesses as uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular issues, or immunological disorders, can affect the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Due to this, every implant treatment should start with a detailed medical examination.

Sufficient bone density and quantity

Dental implants will be directly placed on the jawbone, so a sufficient and strong jawbone is essential. In cases when the patient has significant bone loss, additional procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lift will be necessary to create a strong base for the implant. Another possibility are advanced type of implants designed for bone loss, such as zygomatic implants, pterygoid implants, etc.

Periodontal health and oral hygiene

The gums must be healthy and free of signs of active periodontal disease. Infections or inflammation in the gums can compromise the success of the implant. The patient must also have a good level of oral hygiene and be committed to post-implant care.

Age and development

Dental implants will not be recommended for kids or adolescents who are still developing, since their bones are not fully grown. In adults, age won’t be an issue, as long as their health is stable and their jaw structure is strong enough.

Long-term commitment to oral care

Dental implants require regular maintenance and dental check-ups. A suitable candidate is one who is ready to follow professional instructions and to take care of the implants constantly. This will guarantee functionality and durability.

The Importance Of Jaw Density And Structure

For the successful placement of the dental implants, the jawbone must have enough density and volume. The implant should be placed on a strong base that can keep it stable while eating and during the osseointegration process, where the implant will be naturally integrated with the bone.

In cases when the bone is too thin, soft, or has resorbed due to long-term tooth loss, the risk of implant failure is higher. In these situations, the dentist will recommend additional treatments such as bone grafting or sinus lift to restore bone volume and structure.

Therefore, assessing the density and shape of the jaw through radiographs and 3D scans is a necessary step before any implant intervention.

Periodontal Health And Oral Hygiene

Healthy gums are one of the main conditions for the successful placement of dental implants. If the patient has an active periodontal disease, such as gingivitis or periodontitis, there is a risk that the infection will spread around the implant and cause its failure. This is the main reason why any gum infection or inflammation should be treated beforehand.

Additionally, regular oral hygiene plays an important role in the implant maintenance after placement. Brushing teeth, using dental floss, and periodic controls help prevent other issues that can damage the implants and the surrounding tissues. Patients committed to oral care are more predisposed to have stable and long-term results with dental implants.

Diseases That May Affect Suitability

Some chronic illnesses as uncontrolled diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular illnesses, or autoimmune disorders, can negatively impact the healing process after implant placement. These conditions can slow down the bone regeneration or increase the risk of infection, reducing the possibility of treatment success.

Also, patients who are going through medication therapy will affect the bone metabolism or who have undergone oncological treatments, should be evaluated with special care. The dentist and the doctor should collaborate to make a safe and personalized decision for each case.

How Virtus Dental Center Helps You With Proper Assessment
