Implants, Bridges, Or Dentures: What’s The Best Way To Replace Missing Teeth?
Zygomatic Dental Implants

Losing one or many teeth will not only affect the appearance but also the oral function. Today, we have many effective options for replacing missing teeth, starting from dental implants, bridges and removable dentures. Each of these options has its own advantages and disadvantages. The best choice will depend on the complexity of the case, cost and what the dentist recommends.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metallic structures composed of titanium that are placed on the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. After the implant is placed, a dental crown is built over it that mimics the shape and function of a natural tooth. This system offers a long-lasting and aesthetic solution for replacing missing teeth.

The dental implant process includes several steps: consultation, X-rays, implant placement and after the osseointegration process, the placement of the crown. This procedure requires patience, but the results will be immaculate. Dental implants last a lifetime, significantly improving the patient’s lifestyle.

Advantages Of Dental Implants

One of the main advantages og dental implants is that they stand on their one without the need for support from the nearby teeth, like dental bridges. Dental implants are strongly bonded with the jawbone and offer maximum stability, making eating and chewing easier.

Dental implants also help prevent jawbone loss, which is a common occurrence after tooth loss. Additionally, they will also improve the appearance of the smile and make the patients feel better about themselves.

Most patients have reported that implants feel the same as natural teeth, without causing any discomfort or pain.

Dental Implant Disadvantages

Besides their many benefits, dental implants also have their disadvantages. First things first, their cost is higher compared to bridges or dentures, making them not affordable for many patients.

Also, the procedure does not offer immediate results, the whole process can last a couple of months due to the need for osteointegration and additional procedures such as sinus lift or bone grafting.

Another disadvantage is that not every patient is suitable for dental implants. Patients dealing with advanced periodontal disease, loss of bone density or dealing with uncontrolled systemic diseases such as diabetes will not benefit from this treatment.

Last but not least, like any surgical procedure, there is a minimal risk of infection, pain, or complications after surgery, but they are rare when the treatment is performed by specialised professionals.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are fixed structures used to replace one or more missing teeth at the same time. They are composed of one or more artificial teeth (known as pontics), which are supported by teeth that surround the gap, known as abutment teeth. These teeth are slightly altered and covered with dental crowns to support the bridge.

Dental bridges can be composed of different materials such as porcelain, zirconia or porcelain fused with metal. They are more affordable than dental implants when it comes to replacing missing teeth, but will only be suitable when the patient has healthy abutment teeth on each side.

Dental bridges come in different types including, implant supported bridges, cantilever dental bridge, traditional bridges and maryland dental bridges.

Advantages Of Dental Bridges

One of the main advantages of dental bridges is short treatment time. The procedure will be completed in 1-2 weeks, and they don’t require surgical intervention like dental implants. Patients who are looking for a quicker and effective solution should definitely consider dental bridges.

Furthermore, bridges improve the aesthetic appearance and chewing function while maintaining the correct position of the surrounding teeth. If performed by a specialised clinic, they can look natural and match the colour and shape of existing teeth.

Disadvantages Of Dental Bridges

The main disadvantage of dental bridges is that they require the alteration of healthy teeth loacated near the missing tooth. This means the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel to place the dental crowns, which will affect their long-term health.

Additionally, dental bridges don’t prevent jawbone loss on the missing tooth, since they do not bond with the jaw like dental implants. As time passes, the bridge will need to be replaced or adjusted, especially if the neighbouring teeth are damaged or periodontal issues arise.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental structures used to replace a single tooth or a whole set of teeth. They can be partial (when several teeth are missing) or complete (when all the teeth in a jaw are missing). They usually consist of a plastic base that imitates gum tissue and artificial teeth placed on top of it.

Dentures are supported by the gum line and, in some cases in by the supporting teeth through metal clasps or fixation mechanisms. They are designed in dental labs after the dentist takes the mouth impressions, and they can be removed at any time.

Advantages Of Dentures

The main advantage of dentures is their low cost and quick processing compared to other options. They offer a practical solution for patients who have lost many teeth and who cannot afford more complex procedures such as implants.

Dentures also improve the appearance of the face, supporting the lips and cheeks, which may change their shape after tooth loss. They will also improve speech and chewing ability, restoring a part of the oral function.

Dentures

Disadvantages Of Dentures

Dentures don’t offer the same stability as dental implants or dental bridges, since they can move while eating or speaking. This can cause discomfort and be annoying for many patients, especially during the early stages.

Additionally, dentures can also cause irritation of the gum line and require regular maintenance. They should be cleaned and brudshed daily and as time passes they need to be adjusted and replaced due to the constant changes in the jawbone.

What Is The Best Way To Replace Missing Teeth?

Choosing between dental implants, dental bridges or dentures depends on several factores including the considiton of the jawbone, the number of missing teeth, oral health and costs.

A detailed assessment by a specialised dentist is the first step in determining the most appropriate treatment. Imaging analyses, such as 3D scanning or panoramic radiography, help in assessing the structure of the mouth and accurately planning the treatment.

Patients who are looking for maximum staboility and a long lasting solution will find dental implants the ideal solution, if they are suitable.

Dental bridges, on the other hand, will be the perfect solution for those patients looking for a quicker solution and are willing to undergo the alteration of healthy teeth.

Last bt not least,we have dentures which will be recommended when there are several teeth missing and fixated options are not a choice.

The choice between these three treatments should be made together with the doctor, balancing the functional, aesthetic, and financial needs of the patient.
